"All with Different Roles to Play..."

Over the last few weeks while I have been on maternity leave I have had the pleasure of watching some of my two year old's favorite tv shows. His favorite right now is "Thomas the Train", and I am very thankful for the wide variety of Thomas movies that Netflix has. One thing every movie has is the "Thomas and Friends" theme song and I pretty much have the whole thing memorized.

At first I was annoyed because it was a silly song that got stuck in my head, then I started listening to the words. One line says, "All with different roles to play...", and one day it just hit me that the line can show us a lot about our lives as Christ followers. Thomas is always trying to do everyone else's job only to find out he isn't designed to do that job and the engine designed to do it can always do it better.

We all have a purpose and job to do as the Body of Christ. Romans 12:4-8 says, "For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.”

When we try to do the jobs that God has called someone else to do, it will cause the Body to not work correctly. God has plans for each of us and together those plans allow the Body, His church to work the way He intended to bring others to Him. Our goal should be to figure out where we belong in the Body and work as hard as we can with the best effort we can.
