In light of last Wednesday’s Bible Study, I thought I would use this blog post to tell all of you how good and cool this book we call the Bible really is.
Now many of you are not heavy readers, I myself am not, but I’m sure all of us have a favorite book or have a certain type of book we like to read. Like we learned, everyone loves a good story…that’s the way God made us. Now you think that because God created us to enjoy a good story that he wouldn’t make the most important document, story, love letter, etc…a story! If you’re like me, when I first read about Abraham, Moses, the Israelite Kings I thought that these characters were better than me. They were people that got to physically talk to God, and because of that I figured they were almost like super heroes. As I began to read more and understand more, these “Biblical heroes” were just like me! There are countless examples of how human all of them really are. My favorite example is King David committed adultery and murdered a man, and this is the same guy that has the title of “Man after God’s own heart.” That’s just one of many examples that are mentioned in the Bible of folks who are sinners just like us.
We also learned that it’s important that when we read a passage that we read in context. I’m going to go one step further, and say that we need to read a passage from its original language. Before you ask yourself, how am I supposed to understand what the Bible originally said when I can’t speak Spanish? Well, the Old Testament was originally in Hebrew and New Testament in Greek, and thankfully many of our English versions have translated the original text. Sometimes, though, our Bibles have not used the correct translation, and that’s why it’s important to ask questions, do research, and figure out what did God want us to know in this text. One example is the story of Esther. Many know her as the queen that saved the Israelites from destruction from the Persian King. Most believers don’t know the full context of her queenly duties, and how she almost was killed by the Persian King. If you know those details, it makes her story that more awesome.
The Bible is so relatable, teachable, and life changing that I can’t do it justice in this blog, so you should read it yourselves and see how cool this book really is. Please, if you have questions ask any of us because we are still learning just like you, and we continue to read from the Bible because it’s that good.
