I’m going to start off by saying; I miss being a child. It’s hard leaving something you love for even a day but leaving something like a period of time in your life that you treasure so dearly is unbearable. On the other hand, I know there are people who don’t have a longing for the past or a longing for their childhood, but I’ll admit, I have a strong one.
I often have these nostalgic episodes where I’ll play an old game, watch an old movie, or even just sit and try to remember all the priceless memories that I have as a child. It’s a wonderful thing when you remember crucial details of your favorite memory that you have or when one of your family members or long time friends reminds you of the details. It’s almost like you get to relive the memory for just a second or two.
Nostalgia runs deep in my life and I believe it’s often a blessing but it can sometimes be a curse as well. From my experience up until this point, nostalgia has only grown on me. When I first started experiencing these episodes, they really tore me up. I’ve been somewhat emotional about them. However, I’ve learned to accept them and treat them as if they are a blessing.
I thank God for allowing me to ponder on my most favorite memories without feeling the pain and sadness of having to move on to more serious things like school and a getting a job. Yuck!
Sometimes I wish that I didn’t have these strong desires for the past but whenever I do have them, my “go to” is the word of God:
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has past away; behold, the new has come.” -2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV
“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old” –Isaiah 43:18 ESV
