Dear Dad

I feel like my son constantly teaches me truths. Often, they are so subtle that I sometimes miss them in the moment.
One morning a few weeks back, I had just gotten Caleb up for the morning and taken him to his highchair for breakfast. The first thing we always do is bless the food. Our typical prayer begins, “Dear Jesus.” He was being a tad on the ornery side that morning and instead said, “Dear Dad.” He proceeded to burst out into laughter as he thought he was being hilarious. I immediately corrected him and said, “NO, its dear Jesus.” He “fixed it” and we then finished the prayer.
Now, while I don’t believe he was trying to teach me some deep theological or philosophical point that very morning, he did just that. I realized moments after my correction of his prayer, that sometimes we just need to call it how it is, or how it should be anyways. I happen to think that maybe Caleb inadvertently did just that, and reminded me of an important, if only subtle point.
Yes, Jesus is our Heavenly Father. He is our King. He is our Prince of Peace. He is our Deliver. Our Hiding Place. Our Shield. He is our Rock. He is our Redeemer. He is Dad. Seems a bit different than what you might be used to hearing, but I believe there is a truth in this subtlety of “Dear Dad.” What do you think?
