I like music. I like music of all kinds; I’m the kind of guy who can go from one extreme to the other (Frank Sinatra-Trip Lee). And that’s what I do a lot of the time… I go through bouts of listening to a specific artist or genre for a while before wanting to change it up, keep things fresh! It very much depends on my mood. But, one of my favorite if not my very favorite artist/musician/worship leader is a man named Matt Papa. I experienced him leading worship at a summer camp as a teenager and ever since I’ve been drawn to his style, his way with words, his heart for Jesus. Let’s just say he speaks my language. Every one of his albums rock! Check him out sometime.
With all that said, I want to turn you to lyrics from one of Matt’s songs I’ve been listening to lately, and admittedly it’s been on repeat for some time now. Not very often does a song bring me to tears, but this one has. The song is entitled A Pilgrim’s Progress (Keep Runnin’). I’ve not read John Bunyan’s book by the same name, my guess is that’s where the inspiration came. But, what I want you to know is this song addresses the fact that life hurts much of the time, circumstances crush us, and sometimes it doesn’t change. The fact that it doesn’t change does not relinquish God’s control, but much of the time we (I) don’t like to hear that. God is still in control! So if you are depressed, down, and discouraged and need the reminder that Matt so beautifully speaks in this song, this is for you:
Lord I'm tired, so tired from travelin’
This straight and narrow is
So much harder than I thought
On this path, I've met both doubt and pain
And I've heard their voices say
“Yeah you’ve given all you've got”
But there's a cloud of witnesses
The ones who've run this race
And even louder than my fears
They're cryin’ “warrior lift your face…
CHORUS
“Keep runnin’, keep runnin’
Don't lose heart, don't you give up now
Don't turn around
You've got to find a way somehow (to)
Keep reaching, keep fighting
The pain cannot compare to the reward
That will be yours, that waits in store
For those who just keep runnin'”
On this road, this fight for holiness
I’ve struggled and I've bled
Through these dangers toils and snares
And I have foes, their siren voices call
Saying “Boy your bound to fall
With that heavy cross you bear”
But I remember there was One
Who died to win this race
He took the cross
He crushed the grave
And oh I can hear my Savior say
CHORUS REPEAT
Don't turn aside
No comprise
Just lift your eyes
To the glory that's comin’
If you're like me, you feel like you can't go on
And you'll never see the dawn
And you're just about to break
Don't stop now, know that every sacrifice
It will all be worth the price
When you finally see His face
Just keep runnin’, keep runnin’
Don't lose heart, don't you give up now
Don't turn around
You've got to find a way somehow (to)
Dig deeper, run harder
The pain cannot compare to the reward
That will be yours, that waits in store
For those who just keep (runnin’)
So take my hand
Because we can't do this alone
So til' you hear well done
Until your race is complete
Find a way to just
Keep running, Keep dreaming
Keep Daring, Believing
Keep working, keep waiting
Keep serving, keep praying
Keep moving, keep trying
Keep hoping, keep fighting
Keep going, He's waiting
Arms open, it's coming
Just keep running
